Beetles have always been a large part of Japanese culture, since the time of the samurai, the Japanese have respected and revered beetles. The Kabuto helmets, worn by the samurai resemble the beetles.
In today's day and age beetles are very popular in Japanese culture. Many young boys enjoy having beetle sumo wrestling. The boys collect beetles, either catching them in the wild, or purchasing them from stores. The beetles are then pitted against each other in a competition that is similar to sumo wrestling, hence the name beetle sumo wrestling. The beetles fight on a stump, or a piece of wood like the picture at the top. The first beetle to be pushed off the wood, or off the stump loses, similar to sumo wrestling (tofugu.com).
Below is a video of a Japanese Sumo Beetle fight. You can see that multiple beetles are wrestling on the stump. The last beetle on the stump will win.
Beetles are also very popular combatants in Japanese TV shows, movies, and video games. To the left is an image of Megalon, a Godzilla Villain. Below is an image of Heracross, one of many beetle based pokemon. There is also a Japanese video game based on fighting beetles called Mushiking: King of Beetles. The game is an arcade game where you scan beetle cards, and then battle it out with other players (tofugu.com).
